“I’d like the audience not to be attentive but to be open,” Antonioni said of his films.
A manifesto on the expressive power of silence, this performance offers a sensory experience of closeness and intimacy. Drawing inspiration from several of Antonioni’s films, as well as his writings, the play brings together themes dear to the filmmaker, such as disappearance, the abandonment of feelings, and the instability of perception.
However, this is not an adaptation, but rather a journey into his artistic approach and an attempt to grasp the radical nature of his legacy. The performers’ work drew on a script composed of inner monologues, poetic fragments, and memories. At the same time, numerous improvisations allowed each performer to delve deeper into their own journey.
The stage narrative is the result of this back-and-forth process.
Le Silence is therefore an original creation. Conceived as a single-take sequence, the staging challenges the
traditional rules of storytelling and seeks to disrupt what is commonly understood as theater.
Thanks to the two-sided stage setup, the audience is brought as close as possible to the actors’ faces and bodies, as well as to a multitude of details usually dismissed as mere props.Black-and-white footage is projected simultaneously. It evokes the characters’ inner worlds and fosters a multidimensional and polysemic perception.
Through the economy of words, a different relationship to truth is revealed. The aim is to bring about a transformation. Meaning can then emerge not through the interpretation of words, but through that of gestures, sensations, and the minutest details of physical expression.
